The Peru authorities have declared a state of emergency in the capital of Lima and the neighboring Caliao province due to a sharp increase in crime, including racketeer and armed attacks. This decision gives the government additional powers to deploy the military in order to combat lawlessness. This was reported on March 17 by Reuters.
One of the reasons for the announcement was the murder of the famous Kumbian musician Paul Flores. The bus in which he was traveling on March 16 came under the fire of unknown armed attackers, which caused considerable resonance and outrage among the population.
Peru Dina Boloarte President strongly condemned the murder of the musician and declared her intention to punish the guilty. She also noted that they were threatened with the death penalty. However, according to Reuters, Peru's death penalty is allowed only for convicted traitors.
A 30-day emergency decree provides for the possibility of involving the military in order to protect and combat crime. In recent years, Peru's authorities have repeatedly resolved emergencies in response to a rise in criminal activity or social riots.
