In 11 months of 2024, Ukrainian doctors performed 467 transplants of internal organs. Among them, 311 kidney, 93 liver, and 63 heart transplants were performed. More than 65% of all transplants took place with the participation of deceased donors.
The majority of operations were performed in such medical institutions as the First Medical Association of Lviv, the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. AT. Shalimova and the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Another important procedure carried out in Ukraine is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In 2024, 376 such operations were performed, of which 54 were performed on children. This is 15% more than last year. Most of these transplants were performed at the National Cancer Institute, the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center, and the Kyiv City Nephrology and Dialysis Center.
Important progress in the field of allogeneic transplantation is also noted: the first such operation was performed at the National Cancer Institute, and now this type of transplantation is already carried out in four medical institutions of the country.
Despite the challenges, including the war, Ukrainian doctors continue to perform complex transplant operations, including lung transplants. In addition, complex combined transplants such as heart and kidney, heart and lungs, pancreas and kidney are carried out in Ukraine.
Currently, more than 3,000 patients in Ukraine are waiting for life-saving transplant operations.
