The Japanese startup Toregem Biophorma has announced the start of clinical trials of the world's first medicine, which will help people grow their teeth instead of implants.
This drug, based on antibodies that block protein, which suppresses the growth of teeth, has already undergone successful tests in mice, which led to the appearance of new teeth in rodents.
Initially, the drug has been developed for people suffering from anodocy - lack or deficiency of teeth from birth. This rare phenomenon applies only 0.1% of the planet's population. Subsequently, it is planned to use the drug to treat patients who have lost their own teeth instead of implants.
The first phase of clinical trials will be carried out with the participation of 30 healthy adult men. In the case of successful completion of this phase in 2025, it is planned to move to the second phase of tests, where treatment will be provided in patients aged 2 to 7 years with congenital anodocy.
Toregem Biophorma plans to bring the drug to the market for growing teeth in 2030.
