Extraordinary parliamentary elections are taking place in Portugal on Sunday, March 10.
The polling stations started their work at 08:00 local time (10:00 Kyiv time) and will work until 19:00 (21:00 Kyiv time).
More than 10 million citizens have the right to vote in the elections, who will elect deputies to the 230-seat parliament.
The citizens of the country face a choice between supporting the center-right government or keeping the center-left in power. However, none of these parties appear to have a clear path to an outright majority as the influence of the far right grows.
Among the main themes of the election campaign are the housing crisis caused by skyrocketing rents, low wages, the crisis in the health care system and the widespread corruption that many see as part and parcel of the parties in power.
The snap election comes four months after the surprise resignation of Prime Minister Antonio Kosta amid a bribery investigation. This situation once again threatens the balance between the two centrist parties that have alternated in power since the fall of the dictatorship five decades ago.
