Portugal intends to give up the acquisition of US F-35 fighter jets, which were to replace the old F-16, because of concern about US policy, in particular, during Donald Trump's presidency. The Minister of Defense of Portugal Nuno Mel, who recently announced his resignation, shared this information, explaining that the geopolitical environment and the unpredictability of American politics are forcing the country to seek alternatives.
"We cannot ignore the geopolitical environment in our choice. The recent position of the United States in the context of NATO makes us think of the best options because the predictability of our allies is a greater advantage that should be taken into account," Mel explained, emphasizing the importance of reliability and stability.
One of the main reasons for F-35 refusal is that the US can limit access to important software, spare parts and maintenance updates, which can reduce aircraft combat capability in the future.
"The world has changed ... And this ally can introduce restrictions on the use, maintenance, components and everything that is related to the operation of aircraft and their use in all types of scenarios," he added.
Mel noted that the Portuguese government is considering several alternative options, including French fighters, including Dassault Rafale, can be a serious candidate for F-35 replacement. This will allow Portugal to strengthen its defense capabilities while maintaining independence from the political risks associated with the purchase of American technology.
This solution significantly changes the situation, since earlier the air forces of Portugal recommended to buy Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters, which are one of the most modern aircraft in the world. However, given the fears of US supply and political changes in the US, Portugal is looking for more stable options.
This issue is of great importance in the context of European defense relations, as Portugal can become the first country to abandon US fighters in favor of European alternatives.
