The Prime Minister of Romania resigned after the election failure

Romanian Prime Minister Marchel Colak has filed a resignation statement from the post of the head of the Social Democratic Party after the unsuccessful result in the presidential election. He took third place in the first round, relying with only 2 742 votes in the pro -European candidate Elena Lasconi, who reached the second round with the pro -Russian politician Kalin Georgescu.

According to the results of the calculation of 100% of the vote by the Central Election Commission of Romania, the first place was unexpectedly taken by the independent candidate Kalin Georgescu, a far -right politician with pro -Russian rhetoric, gaining 22.94% of the vote. No previous polls provided him in the second round, which made him a victory with the main sensation of the election.

In second place - Elena Laskoni, a representative of the opposition union of rescue of Romania, who won 19.18% of the vote. Its pro -European and pro -Ukrainian position contrasts with the anti -Western platform Georgescu.

Marchel Cholak, having scored 19.14%, was only a few thousand votes behind the gentleman. The current prime minister announced that he would not challenge the results by admitting his defeat.

Chlak declared his resignation from the post of the leader of the Social Democratic Party, taking responsibility for the loss. A similar step was made by the chairman of the Coalition National Liberal Party Nicolae Chuke, who took fifth place with 8.79% of the vote.

This means a serious crisis for the ruling coalition, which could not ensure the passage of their candidates to the second round, giving way to both pro -European and pro -Russian camps.

Kalin Georgescu, known for his anti -Western views, actively criticizes the EU and NATO, claiming that they do not take into account Romania's interests. Georgescu also accuses the United States of manipulation around the war in Ukraine. His victory in the first round was alarming among the supporters of European integration.

Elena Leason, on the contrary, positions herself as a defender of democratic values ​​and European integration. It openly criticized the government for a lack of response to the fall of Russian drones in the Romanian territory and proposed a more rigid policy towards neighbors, including Hungary.
