Finland President Alexander Stubb expressed the opinion that a truce between Ukraine and Russia can be reached in the coming months. He made such a statement on Thursday, January 30, during a meeting with journalists, reports the Yle Finnish edition.
Stubb noted that with cautious optimism is the aspirations of President Donald Trump to reach peace in Ukraine.
"At first they will strive for a truce, which will take from 3 to 6 months, and then for peace talks," he said.
The President of Finland emphasized that his country adheres to the principles of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in the coming days, weeks and months to ensure its strong position for possible negotiations about the ceasefire and peace.
Stubb also stated that his optimism had grown after talking to President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky last week.
Answering questions about the chances of Donald Trump to plant Vladimir Putin at the negotiation table, the Finnish leader noted that the Trump method was to put forward ultimatum and coercion to peaceful negotiations.
“Personally, I think Putin understands only rigid rhetoric. And it is in such a language that Donald Trump is now referring to him, ”Stubb said, adding that he considers this approach correct.
In his opinion, there is no risk that peace in Ukraine will be discussed without Kyiv. He also stressed that Europe should participate in negotiations because they are solving the future of European security.
