In an interview with British journalist Pierce Morgan, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that in a war in Ukraine, elections were impossible. He commented, in particular, in the context of the Kremlin's recent statements about his "illegitimacy". Zelensky emphasized that 73% of Ukraine's population was elected, and that it has always been opened before the elections, but there are currently significant legal and human difficulties for their organization.
"It is necessary to change the legislation, the Constitution, and it is related to great difficulty, especially because of the situation on the front," he said, stressed that military, millions of citizens in temporarily occupied territories and abroad will not be able to vote if the elections are now.
Zelensky stated that the elections would take place after the hot phase of war, when the martial law ended. The President stressed that this is necessary to protect democracy in the country.
Zelensky also added that Ukraine cannot abolish martial law due to pressure from Russia, as this will lead to the return of most Ukrainian military homes without security guarantees, which could threaten the country's further occupation. "It is impossible without safety guarantees, so we need answers to these questions," the President summarized.
