Putin proposes a new Eurasian security architecture as an alternative to NATO

Volodymyr Putin is actively working on the creation of an alternative coalition of countries and the introduction of the Eurasian Security Architecture, which aims to become an alternative to the Western security system and undermine NATO.

On June 21, Putin officially announced his intention to ensure “equal and indivisible security in Eurasia” and expressed his readiness to discuss this initiative with the SCO, CIS, EAES and Brix, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The Russian leader also confirmed Russia's readiness for discussions with European countries and NATO countries "when they are ready."

Serhiy Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, during a meeting of foreign ministers of the City Council of June 21 at Almaty (Kazakhstan), emphasized Russia's active efforts to form the Eurasian Security Architecture, which should replace the Euro -Atlantic security system. The initiative provides a need for joint efforts to create new safe structures on the Eurasian continent.

According to ISW analysis, Lavrov may also mean expanding cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asia (ASEAN). Putin actively demonstrates the interest in the development of relations with this organization, which was emphasized during his visit to Vietnam on June 20.

"Putin has included in his proposal Vietnam and North Korea, which are not often mentioned in the political concepts of Eurasia. This testifies to his intention to include Southeastern Asia in the new Eurasian security structure, using historically friendly relations of individual countries of the region with the former Soviet Union."

The Institute of War Study also recalled that Putin began to build an information basis for this Eurasian security structure during his May visit to China in 2024 and offered it in his speech on June 14, where he criticized the "Euro -Atlantic security system" and declared its destruction.

"The Kremlin's information operations aimed at false positioning of Western countries as the sole supporters of Ukraine will probably be supported by Putin and other high -ranking Russian officials," the ISW report added.
