The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved a bill that introduces the Institute of Multiple Citizenship. This decision will allow citizens who have passports of other countries, re -integrate into Ukrainian society and maintain legal connection with the Motherland.
On Wednesday, June 18, the People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported about the adoption of the Law No. 11469 on Wednesday, June 18. 243 MPs voted in favor of the decision. All amendments to the document were taken into account in the editorial board of the profile committee.
Despite the support of the majority, the law also caused some contradictions in the parliament hall. 19 people's deputies opposed, 9 more abstained, and 34 did not vote.
The law opens up new opportunities to millions of Ukrainians living abroad. From now on, they will be able to officially have passports of other states without losing Ukrainian citizenship. This will strengthen the links between Ukraine and its numerous diaspora around the world, and will strengthen the support of the state by Ukrainians outside the country.
At the same time, the law does not apply to citizens of states that are recognized as aggressor countries or occupiers. Thus, Ukraine retains mechanisms for protection of national security, preventing potential threats.
The government and profile bodies should develop appropriate mechanisms for implementing the law and adaptation of legal norms for a new model of citizenship.
