Obesity and cardiovascular diseases are two serious threats to modern health, and, as a new study has shown, sharp weight fluctuations can be no less dangerous than overweight.
Scientists at the University of England Raskin have analyzed the data of 8297 participants from the United Kingdom over 14 years and found that both recruitment and loss of more than 10 kg significantly increase the risk of death. Weight gain per 10 kg-three times increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and almost twice as of all reasons. Weight loss by 10 kg - increases the risk of death by 54%. The stable weight, even within the limits of obesity, is less risky than sharp changes in body weight. According to Dr. Juufen Zhang, sharp weight loss or weight gain can be dangerous, especially for people with heart problems. This causes fears about weight loss drugs, such as Ozempic and WEGOVY, which rapidly reduce body weight, but may have unexpected risks. From 1993 to 2022, the level of obesity in England increased from 15% to 29%. Smoking, young age and high BMI are the main risk factors for uncontrolled weight gain.
The main thing is not so much weight loss as maintaining stable body weight, because sharp weight fluctuations can cause more harm than good.
