Russia plans to launch nuclear weapons into space: what this means for US national security

On Capitol Hill on Feb. 14, the White House national security adviser and top lawmakers tried to allay public concerns after the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee warned of a "threat to the national security" of the United States from "destabilizing foreign military capabilities" that are so serious that President Joe Biden should declassify "all information" about it.

Two sources familiar with the discussions said the intelligence related to Russia's intention to launch nuclear weapons into space.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that it is not about the intention "to drop nuclear weapons on Earth, but probably to use them against satellites."

Many members of Congress called the problem "serious," though not one that should cause public panic.

"We are going to work together to resolve this matter because we are dealing with all sensitive classified matters. However, we assure you that everything is under control," Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson told reporters.

Congressman Jim Himes, Democrat of Connecticut and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, confirmed this in a statement, calling the warning "important" but "not a cause for panic."

Earlier, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, the representative of the Republican Party of Ohio Mike Turner, said that his commission "has provided all members of Congress with information about a serious threat to national security."

It should be noted that on October 12, 2023, Congress created a bipartisan Commission on Strategic Policy, which reported that the United States should prepare for possible simultaneous conflicts with Russia and China by expanding its armed forces, strengthening alliances, and accelerating its nuclear weapons modernization program. The report comes amid tensions with China over the situation in Taiwan and worsening political relations with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
