Russia is to blame for the "climate catastrophe" because of the war in Ukraine

Activists urge the European Court of Human Rights to recognize the Russian Federation guilty of creating a "climate catastrophe", Euractiv reports. Russia's war against Ukraine contributes to the sharp growth of greenhouse gas emissions, which significantly worsens the global climatic crisis.

Last year, the Russian eco -protection group, together with 18 citizens, filed a lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights, stating that Moscow's actions violate human rights due to the deterioration of the climate situation.

"Russia is killing the climate," said Vladimir Slivak co -chair in an interview with AFP in Geneva. He stressed that although Vladimir Putin signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, which aims to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre -industrial level, Russia could not limit greenhouse gas emissions or reduce fossil fuel production.

On the contrary, internal political documents indicate that Russia plans to "only grow coal, oil and gas production" for at least the next decade. Slivak stressed that the growth of greenhouse gases in Russia is closely linked to the war in Ukraine. "During the war, greenhouse gas emissions are increasing significantly, as additional production lines for tanks and weapons appear, as well as emissions when using weapons," he explained.

Slivak also called for strengthening sanctions against Russia. He stated that Russia can continue the war only if sufficient fossil fuel is selling. "If the world has stopped buying fossil fuel in Russia right now, it would most likely lead to the end of this war this year," Slivak assured.

The plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in August 2023 after the first attempt to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, which refused to hear the case. "We want the court to decide that Russian politics ... is dangerous for climate and the world," the eco -protection explained.

This activists' initiative is aimed at drawing attention to the negative impact of Russian aggression on the climate and calls for an international community to prevent an ecological catastrophe that unfolds against the background of military conflict.
