Sanctions against Russian tankers will lead to an increase in the price of gasoline in the United States

US Presidential Administration Joe Baiden faces a difficult election in the context of international relations and domestic policy, especially in the light of the current geopolitical conflict with Russia.

According to the New York Times, the administration delayed the imposition of sanctions against Russian tankers for reasons of US economic security, as this can lead to an increase in global oil prices and, accordingly, the rise in price of gasoline in the United States on the eve of November elections, New York Times writes with reference to sources.

In an attempt to deprive Russia of the money needed to continue the war in Ukraine, the United States and their allies imposed fines and took other steps to limit Moscow's income from oil selling abroad. But Russia is increasingly finding ways to bypass these restrictions by creating its fleet of tankers.

The US Treasury proposes to impose sanctions against Russian tankers.

However, economic advisers in the White House are afraid that this can lead to an increase in oil prices this summer and an increase in gasoline prices in the United States, which can damage Mr Biden's election campaign, NYT notes.

"The debate reflects the tension that has always undergone new efforts of the administration to limit sales of Russian oil: how to weaken Moscow's military car without causing a political reaction that can occur due to an increase in gasoline prices for American drivers," the article reads.
