For the first time in the history of the state, the Security Service of Ukraine exposed an agent network of Hungary's military intelligence, which conducted espionage in the territory of Transcarpathian region. According to the results of the special operation, two people who worked for foreign intelligence were detained, the SBU press service reports.
The intelligence network was engaged in the gathering of sensitive information on the region's defense capability: the state of land and air defense, the public sentiment of the local population, a possible reaction to the introduction of a foreign military contingent, as well as manifestations of separatist trends. The agents were also interested in the situation with illegal arms circulation, the number of power structures and their technical support.
One of the detainees is a former military from the Berehiv district, recruited by Hungarian intelligence in 2021. It was activated in the fall of 2024. He was given the task of reconnaissance in Transcarpathia, then left for Hungary with counterfeit documents, where he reported before the curator. During the meeting, he was handed cash and special communication facilities for transmission. He also had to establish recruiting new informants.
Another detained is the former serviceman of the security and defense forces of Ukraine, which has recently been vacated. She transmitted to the foreign side information about the aviation and defense systems of the military unit where she was serving.
The SBU recorded numerous contacts of agents with a curator - an employee of Hungary's military intelligence. It is established that this activity was intended to collect data not only in Transcarpathia, but also in frontline areas.
During the searches, the detainees removed the evidence of espionage, including encryption mobile phones and communication. The defendants of the case were suspected of a state treason committed in martial law. They are threatened with life imprisonment with the confiscation of property.
