What Ukraine can expect from the summit of NATO leaders

NATO leaders meeting in Washington is a key event for discussing the Alliance's future policy to support Ukraine in the context of its military conflict with Russia and NATO membership opportunities. This summit will be important for defining the future course and alliance strategies.

Although it is expected that NATO leaders at the Washington summit will assure Ukraine of their unchanged support, they will most likely not clearly indicate the possibility of future Ukraine's membership in the Alliance, Euractiv writes.

The NATO official line was still such that Ukraine would join the Western military alliance once after the war. Plus, Ukraine has two conditions: democratic reforms and security contributions.

The publication writes that Ukrainian officials privately admit that they do not expect to enter NATO at this summit or in the near future, but Kiev has been counting on at least stringent formulations in Washington.

Following the previous NATO summit, NATO is trying to find a balance between Ukraine's progress in reforms and the modernization of the Armed Forces for membership and the "reduction of Kiev's expectations" about the rapid accession to the Alliance.
