Artificial intelligence and fake news will undermine democratic elections around the world - Blinken

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned that this year, voters and candidates in many countries of the world will expect a "stream of lies" and misinformation, which will contribute to the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and social networks. He made his statement at the third summit for democracy in Seoul.

"This year, more than half of the world's population will go to the polls, which makes it extremely important for each country. However, citizens and candidates are faced with a stream of lies that impedes serious civic discussions," Blinken emphasized.

According to him, the spread of misinformation is growing rapidly due to the use of digital technologies, including social networks and AI. "Fake news and misinformation, based on artificial intelligence and digital technologies, not only violate personal freedom and human rights, but also threaten democratic systems," he said.

Blinken emphasized that the enemies of democratic countries use these technologies to take advantage of differences within democracies, promoting distrust and cynicism, discrediting institutions and creating instability. He also stressed that the fight against misinformation is a priority for US diplomacy and national security.

"We continue to expose, stop and restrain misinformation," the Secretary of State assured.
