Switzerland prevented a Russian diplomat's attempt to buy weapons ahead of the Global Peace Summit

Swiss intelligence services have prevented the attempt of an employee of the Russian embassy to buy weapons and dangerous substances in front of the global peace summit.

According to intelligence services, a Russian agent who worked as a diplomat in Berne tried to buy weapons and dangerous substances in several places in Switzerland. He visited a shop owned by a Swiss-German arms trader.

Swiss Prosecutor General's Office confirmed several searches in homes with the participation of cantonal police as part of the investigation. However, it is unknown whether arrests were made or whether someone is in custody.

The Russian spy in Switzerland is suspected of violating laws on military materials and banning weapons export. Another suspect is under investigation for violation of the legislation on control over goods.

Despite the diplomatic immunity of the Russian agent, the Prosecutor General's Office of Switzerland appealed to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs to remove his immunity, and to the Federal Council - to allow criminal proceedings. However, the Russian diplomat has already left Switzerland.

Before the Peace Summit, the upper house of the Swiss Parliament supported the proposal to strengthen measures for the expulsion of spies, especially agents of Russian intelligence.

Also, on June 18, the Hararsky County Court found guilty of espionage in favor of Russia's former professor at Tartu University Vyacheslav Morozov.
