Switzerland expressed his willingness to organize a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin if both parties give consent. This was stated by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Ministry Nicolas Bido, emphasizing that the country is ready to maintain diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, if it is recognized as necessary for the stability of international relations.
Switzerland traditionally plays the role of mediator in international negotiations, and this initiative is part of its constant readiness to promote peaceful processes, especially in the context of the current geopolitical situation. Bido stressed that the government of the country has the right to make an exception to organize peace talks, even despite the order of the International Criminal Court (ICS) for the arrest of Vladimir Putin. On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in Hague issued a warrant for the arrest of Vladimir Putin and the Russian Ombudsman of Russia, Maria Lviv-Belova. They are accused of illegal deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia since the beginning of the war in February 2022. This decision has become an important point in international law and caused significant diplomatic discussions.
However, Switzerland stated that the ISS warrant would not interfere with the organization between Trump and Putin, as the country has the right to make exclusion for peace talks, which, in their opinion, can help resolve the conflict. The Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that the country continues to inform Ukraine, Russia and the United States about its readiness to promote peace talks. Switzerland has repeatedly been a mediator in important international negotiations. It is known that the country has a long history of a neutral position in international conflicts, which allows it to play the role of an independent mediator in diplomatic processes.
At the same time, organizing a meeting between such important world leaders as Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin can be an important step in finding ways to reduce tensions between the US and Russia, especially in the context of war in Ukraine and other global problems. Meeting between Trump and Putin in Switzerland can be a significant step in international politics, especially given that both leaders have great influences on the global situation. Switzerland, which acts as a neutral side, tries not only to help reduce the conflict, but also to maintain stability on the world stage.
Despite the scandal around the ISS Order, Switzerland's diplomatic efforts can be an important step in the way to possible negotiations that can help reduce tension and open new opportunities to resolve international conflicts.
