One of the most recognizable reports for the exchange of messages in the history of the Internet - Skype - announced his closure. All user data, including chats and contacts, will be lost if they do not have time to save them by the end of January 2026.
The completion of the service was announced in February 2025, but key changes will take effect this week. Skype has been launched in 2003 and has become popular with millions of users worldwide for many years, including more than 300 million active users. However, over time, the popularity of the platform has declined significantly due to the appearance of competitors, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. In 2011, Microsoft purchased Skype, but eventually focused on the development of Microsoft Teams, leaving Skype in the shade. Skype users were asked to switch to Microsoft Teams Free, where similar features were available.
To save important chats and contacts, Skype users need to go to Teams by January 2026 or download data from the application. If not done, all data will be irreversibly deleted. Skype will continue to exist for users who work in the business environment, but in the future, this service is likely to be transferred to Teams.
Skype closure has become a topic of discussion among users. Many people have expressed sums about this change, noting that Skype has become an important part of their professional and personal life. Others perceive the news with less emotionality, saying: "a tablecloth of a track."
