Ways of supporting a child during separation due to the participation of one of the parents in the war

Participants of the All -Ukrainian Mental Health Program "Are you like?" Initiated by the first lady Elena Zelenskaya, shared tips on how to help children seek separation from parents who went to defend their homeland.

According to information from the Ministry of Reintegration, experts recommend the following:

  1. Explain to the child the reasons for the absence of a father or mother, emphasizing that their love and expectations of meeting with her remain unchanged.
  2. Be frank with your baby. Explain the situation in the country, refraining from unnecessary heavy details.
  3. Actively communicate and embrace the child, contributing to the free expression of her emotions.
  4. Direct your child's emotional stress on specific actions by suggesting something for a parent or mother, such as cooking or creating a product yourself.
  5. Organize and maintain a telephone or video communication between the child and the missing parent/mother, having agreed on regular days and time for such communication.
  6. Together, look at family photos while reminiscent of funny and pleasant family moments.
  7. Promote the child's dreaming when planning the events they will do when a father or mother returns home.
