The USA should confront Russia and help Ukraine - Helsinki Commission

Washington must change its policy towards the Russian Federation, abandoning the Cold War approach and recognizing Moscow as a constant threat to global security. Such recommendations are contained in the new report of the Helsinki Commission, reported by The Hill .

According to the report, the United States should adopt a new approach to Russia, similar to the changes implemented in recent years in relations with China. This involves reviewing the distribution of resources and directing them to counteract Russian aggression.

One of the priorities, according to the report's authors, is ensuring Ukraine's victory in the war against Russia. The report calls for an increase in military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv, as well as giving the Ukrainian armed forces the ability to strike Russian territory with the use of American weapons.

The recommendations exceed current commitments from the Joe Biden administration and are controversial among some Republicans. In particular, they do not agree with the position of former President Donald Trump, who insists that the US spends too many resources on European security. Trump proposes to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia through direct negotiations with the leaders of both countries, including Vladimir Putin.

However, the chairman of the Helsinki Commission, Republican congressman Joe Wilson (South Carolina), categorically rejects the possibility of concluding an agreement with Putin. He believes that the Russian president is not a reliable partner for negotiations. "Putin is not the kind of person with whom you can reach an agreement that would be substantial and lasting," Wilson said in a brief interview for The Hill .

Despite growing opposition within the ranks of the Republican Party to further support for Ukraine, most of its leaders responsible for foreign policy continue to support providing aid to Kyiv, strengthening NATO, and promoting democracy in post-Soviet countries.

The US Helsinki Commission, established in 1975, monitors compliance with the Helsinki Agreements and promotes security and cooperation in Europe. Her latest report emphasizes the importance of rethinking the attitude towards Russia as the main threat to the world order, demanding the US to intervene more actively in the conflict on the side of Ukraine.
