The Donald Trump Administration considers the possibility of withdrawing from Europe about 20,000 US military, which has caused concern among European allies. According to The Washington Post, these troops were launched during Joe Biden's presidency as a response to a threat from Russia. If the reduction occurs, it can seriously weaken the defense capability of the EU and NATO.
According to military experts, 75,000 to 105,000 US military is located in Europe, of which 63,000 are on a permanent basis. The presence of the United States in the region is a key element of European security, especially against the background of tensions with Russia. European officials are afraid that troops can be part of Trump's negotiations with Moscow. They also point out that, in addition to the defensive role, American bases in Europe play an important strategic function for US global operations. For example, the Ramstein base in Germany is an important center for hostage coordination not only in Europe, but also in the Middle East and Africa. Some analysts believe that even if the US decides to cut the contingent, it will be done gradually without sharp changes. At the same time, Europe should be ready for a scenario for which the US can review its obligations in NATO.
European leaders have already begun to discuss alternative scenarios to strengthen the defense capability, which can give impetus to creating a full European security system, independent of the US.
