On February 21, the United States registered at the UN General Assembly its project of resolution dedicated to the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The text of the document has caused some contradictions due to the lack of clear references to the aggressor, as well as because it did not use the word "war". Instead, the resolution refers to the "Russian-Ukrainian conflict", which is criticized by some states and organizations.
The document regretts life losses in this conflict, and emphasizes that the main purpose of the UN is to maintain international peace and security, as well as a peaceful resolution of debates. The resolution calls for the rapid completion of the conflict and the establishment of a long peace between Russia and Ukraine. It consists of only three paragraphs, which emphasizes its conciseness.
The US resolution will compete for adoption with the version proposed by Ukraine and the EU countries, which clearly state Russian crimes against international law, which reflects a more stringent position on Moscow. The US, in turn, is trying to maintain a more neutral approach, which is likely to be related to the efforts to support countries that do not want or cannot take decisive measures on Russia.
In addition, Russia has declared its intention to make its amendment to the resolution, which will refer to "the end of the conflict by resolving its deep reasons", which is characteristic of the propaganda rhetoric of the Kremlin. The Russian representative to the UN reported that if this amendment, the country is ready to vote for the US resolution.
