US offers control of the Zaporozhye NPP as a step to peace

US Presidential Administration Donald Trump considers the idea of taking the US control of the territory around the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZPP). This issue, which is currently being actively discussed at the diplomatic level, has become publicized through publications in the US media, in particular, in The Wall Street Journal.

According to the newspaper, the White House proposes to declare the surrounding areas of the NPP "neutral zone", which could be under the control of the United States. This decision, according to sources, was made by Kyiv during negotiations in Paris last week, in order to promote the end of the war and ensure the safety of nuclear infrastructure in the face of a continuing conflict. One of the main reasons for this proposal is the need to guarantee a stable supply of electricity not only for Ukraine, but also for Russia -occupied territories. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Zaporizhzhia NPPs will supply electricity for both Ukrainian regions and those under the control of the Russian Federation after the 2022 invasion.

In addition, in a conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in March 2023, Donald Trump raised the issue of possible US acquisition of Ukrainian power plants, including nuclear facilities. The American leader stated that such a decision could be a "best protection" for Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which is especially important in war. In general, the idea of introducing US control over nuclear objects in Ukraine causes ambiguous reactions among political experts and diplomats. Some consider it a logical step to ensure the safety of nuclear objects and the stability of the energy situation in the region, while others warn of the possible consequences of such an initiative for Ukraine's national sovereignty.

Thus, the future of this proposal will remain the subject of lively diplomatic discussions, but it is clear that it opens new perspectives for the development of international relations between the US, Ukraine and Russia against the background of war and struggle for energy security.
