US is reducing military presence in Syria

The United States began with the process of removing part of their military contingent from northeastern Syria. According to The New York Times , it is already decided to close three of the eight US military bases in the region. Reduction of military presence occurs within the plan of reducing the total contingent of the United States from about 2000 to 1400 servicemen.

According to the report, among the closed objects is the Green Vilidge base, MSS Euphrates and another smaller military position. At the same time, the US forces that remain in the region will continue their presence in reduced composition, including parts of special purpose.

Despite the reduction, the US forces will remain involved in the support of Syrian democratic forces (SDF), which act as an ally of Washington in the region in the fight against the remains of the Islamic State terrorist organization. In addition, the US military will continue to assist in maintaining and ensuring the operation of camps for the maintenance of prisoners of IDIL.

The US military command reported that the withdrawal of troops is based on the recommendations of field commanders who suggested reviewing the number of facilities in the region and optimizing logistics. This step has already been agreed at the Pentagon and the US Central Command, which is responsible for operations in the Middle East.

One of the US officials noted that after about 60 days the command will evaluate the results of the reduction, after which it will be decided whether it is necessary to continue withdrawal of troops. It is expected that even after possible additional abbreviations, at least 500 US military personnel will remain in the territory of Syria.
