Zimbabwe's capital is on the brink of crisis: a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of cholera

The capital of Zimbabwe, Harare, has declared a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of cholera. According to the Ministry of Health, currently 7 398 people are suspected of infection with cholera, 109 of them are hospitalized, and 50 have already died of this disease.

Local authorities claim that the situation resembles a cholera outbreak, which took place in 2008, when 4,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 were sick. The epicenter of the present case is the suburbs of Harare Kuvadzan, where almost half of all cases of the disease are recorded.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (MFTCHICHP) is concerned about the lack of health workers and materials to effectively combat outbreaks.

The Minister of Health has announced the measures of combating cholera, but the problem is further complicated by the lack of clean water in the country, which has caused the rapid spread of the disease over the last months.

The MFTCHCHP warns that cholera can quickly cross the city borders and cover different areas of all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe, which poses a threat to the entire population of the country.
