More than 60 migrants, including women and children, were drowned as a result of a shipwreck near the Libya coast, the International Organization for UN Migration (IOM) reported in its official report on the social network H.
"During the tragic accident of a ship that occurred near the shores of Libya, 61 migrants were killed, including women and children. According to the surviving, a boat with about 86 people sailed from the Libyan shores in the Zara district," the statement said.
The city of Zara is located in the west of the Tripoli capital and is more than 60 km away from the border with Tunisia.
Mom added that the Central Mediterranean continues to remain one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world.
Libya plays a key role in the Central Mediterranean route, and every year tens of thousands of people cross its borders. Tragedies at sea have become a common event, as many of them flee from conflicts in search of a better life.
According to the latest UN Agency for Refugees (UNCC), more than 2.5 thousand people were killed in the Central Mediterranean this year.
