Trump changes citizenship by birth

The newly elected US President Donald Trump signed a decree on his first day that changes the process of granting citizenship to children born in the country. About it reports CNN on Tuesday, January 21.

According to a new decree, federal institutions are prohibited from issuing certain documents that usually confirm US citizenship. The document will come into force for the next 30 days and extend solely to children born after that date.

The main categories concerning the decree are:

  • children whose parents are in the United States illegally;
  • Children born to a mother -in -law on a visa if the child's father is not a US citizen.

The decree is based on the interpretation of the term "subject to jurisdiction" contained in the 14th amendment to the US Constitution. Proponents of rigid immigration policy believe that children of illegal immigrants do not meet this criterion, and therefore are not entitled to automatic citizenship.

This initiative has caused considerable public resonance. Trump's supporters apply him for determination to fight illegal migration, seeing a step towards protecting national interests. At the same time, human rights organizations and opponents of the administration criticize this decree, stating that it contradicts the spirit of the Constitution and fundamental principles of equality.

Experts predict that the innovation will be the subject of numerous court appeals. The main argument of critics is that the 14th amendment directly guarantees the right to citizenship for all children born in the US, regardless of their parents' status. However, the Trump administration insists that such an interpretation of the correction is outdated and does not meet modern challenges.
