Three UN observers were injured while patrolling the border in Lebanon

Three UN peacekeeping observers and their translator were injured while patrolling the border on foot in southern Lebanon on Saturday when a shell exploded near them.

Shelling of peacekeepers, as stated in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), is unacceptable. UNIFIL, which helps monitor the Israeli-Lebanese border, stressed the need to guarantee the safety of UN personnel.

The injured employees were taken to the hospital. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

"In accordance with international humanitarian law, all parties are responsible for ensuring the protection of non-combatants, including peacekeepers, journalists, medical personnel and the civilian population. We call on all parties to stop the current intense firefights," UNIFIL said.

Two security sources told Reuters that the observers were wounded in what appeared to be an Israeli strike, but the Israeli military denied that the shelling did not take place in the area.

"Despite reports, the (Israeli military - note) did not fire on a UNIFIL vehicle in the Rmeish area this morning," the statement said.

The Israeli military and Iran-linked Hezbollah have exchanged fire almost daily across the border since October 7, when the current conflict in Gaza began.
