Poland, Lithuania and Latvia refused the right to span the aircraft of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo and President Serbia Alexander Vuchich, who were heading to Russia. The ban is explained by "technical and diplomatic sensitivity".
Vilnius became the first capital that blocked the flights, explaining this with a decision based on the "technical and diplomatic sensitivity of the route". Subsequently, Riga and Warsaw took a similar position. Latvia noted that they did not allow the flight of Vuchich aircraft because of the "political sensitivity of the purpose of flight."
These restrictions have made it impossible for the direct flight of the leaders of the two countries to Russia. Fitzo and Vuchich's press services have not yet made an official comment on the incident.
The ban on the use of airspace may indicate an increase in tensions in relations between EU countries and politicians that retain or deepen contacts with Moscow against the background of ongoing aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
