Greenland intends to move to independence, and the first step in this direction can be taken through a referendum. In an interview, the chairman of Greenland Government Party Eric Jensen said that independence should be resolved in a referendum and the votes of the population should be heard.
Jensen expressed support for the activation of article 21, which provides for the possibility of declaring independence and proposed to start negotiations with Denmark Prime Minister Matte Frederixen. At the same time, all five Parliamentary parties of Greenland oppose the idea of joining the island to the United States, which Donald Trump recently stated. According to a survey, 85% of Greenlanders do not support this initiative.
However, Greenland's independence remains priority for local politicians, and a referendum can be an important step in obtaining autonomy.
