Protests erupted in Georgia over the rejection of European integration

In the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, mass rallies began after the statement of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze to refuse negotiations on the country's accession to the European Union. On Thursday, November 28, thousands of citizens gathered near the Parliament building, expressing their dissatisfaction with the government's decision, which they consider the betrayal of national interests.

The Government's decision to refuse to join the EU in 2028 was called by protesters violation of the Constitution, in particular Article 78, which enshrines Georgia's desire for European integration.

"This is a betrayal of the country's interests and the threat to our future," the participants of the action say. They emphasize that such steps of the government can destroy many years of approval of rapprochement with Europe, for which many generations of Georgians fought.

Salome Zurabishvili conducted emergency consultations with the diplomatic corps and opposition representatives, and then made a rigid statement. She accused power of a coup against the Georgian people and called on the international community to intervene.

"I have called for diplomats right now to make decisions that have been taken for a long time. The event should help Georgian society, because the main task today is to appoint and hold a new parliamentary election," Zurabishvili said.

Mass protests in Georgia continue, and society is determined to achieve changes.
