Bullfighting resumed in Mexico City: the first bullfight took place amid protests

In Mexico City, a bullfight took place at the Plaza México arena for the first time in the last 1.5 years, provoking protests by animal rights activists. A huge arena in Mexico City was completely filled with spectators following a decision by Mexico's Supreme Court, which temporarily overturned a local court order suspending traditional bullfights.

Protesters, shouting the slogans "‎Murderers!", gathered near the site, expressing their disapproval of the bullfight and pointing out the violation of the rights of animals and people to a healthy environment. Bullfights are now legal in most of Mexico, but there is an active fight to ban them in the capital.

About 300 protesters opposed the bullfight, holding placards and shouting protest slogans. Six bulls died during a bullfight in the Plaza México arena, and their participation in the chase was welcomed by supporters of traditional bullfighting.

In May 2022, a local court decided to stop bullfighting at Plaza México, but in December 2023, the Supreme Court overturned this decision. The judicial system must now consider the impact of combat measures on animal and human welfare. The battle for and against bullfighting continues in Mexico, where it brings in significant profits from tourists and fans of traditional fights, as well as angering animal rights activists and certain social groups.
