In Germany, it will be easier to change gender in documents

On April 12, the German Parliament passed a law on self -determination, simplifying the procedure of legal change of gender. This initiative eliminates the need for a separate court decision to change the gender in the documents.

For more than 40 years, the Transsexual Law has been in Germany, which envisaged the evaluation of two transgese experts and a court decision to change gender in documents. Previously, marriage, gender surgery or sterilization surgery were also required, but these requirements were canceled by the highest court.

The new law allows you to change the name and legal gender by submitting an application to the administrative bodies. Persons aged 14 years of age can do it on their own, younger children - with the consent of parents or guardians.

Although the law does not interfere in the procedure of surgical change of gender, it allows the owners of gyms and dressings to decide who can use the cabins of the appropriate sex.

However, the conservative opposition has criticized the legislation, arguing that it does not contain sufficient guarantees against abuse and does not protect young people.

The Self -Determination Law is one of the social reforms promised by Chancellor Olaf Solz's coalition government. Similar legislation already exists in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Spain.
