A resident of the Norwegian city of Bineset woke up on May 22 in the morning and saw in his garden… a 135-meter truck. The NCl Salten ship, which followed the Trondheim Fjord towards Orchanger, went off the course and sat on a shallows just near an apartment building, almost not touched it.
According to eyewitnesses, the ship was moving at a speed of 16 knots (approximately 30 km/h), when for unknown reasons took the course directly on the shore. In the end, the ship stopped in the garden of a local resident Johann Helberg, who has been living in this house for 25 years.
His neighbor Jeten Jorgensen heard a loud sound and saw a giant ship approaching the shore. The man rushed to warn Helberg, but he did not immediately woke up. When the owner of the house still looked out the window, a real giant was put in front of him.
“I had to wrap my head to see his top. It was so unrealistic, ”Helberg shared his impressions.
“Another five meters south - and he would fly into the bedroom. This is a very cumbersome new neighbor, but he will soon get away from here, ”he added jokingly.
On board the vessel, which was registered in Cyprus, there were 16 crew members - Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians and Russians. No one was injured as a result of the incident, there were no reports of injury or oil leakage.
The police have started an investigation into the incident and already found one suspect from the ship. How possible causes of the accident are considered a technical malfunction or human error.
North Sea Container Line, which owned the ship, stated that there was no reason to believe that the incident was deliberate and suspicious reports were a common police procedure.
The first attempt to remove the ship from the shallow failed. The ship will stay off the shore at least until the next tide.
