On March 11, a solemn ceremony of joining Sweden to NATO took place in Brussels. Sweden's flag was raised to the flagship near the Alliance headquarters, officially making it 32 of NATO member.
The broadcast of the ceremony was available on the NATO website. The Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and NATO representatives, including Jens Secretary General Stoltenberg, took part in the flag.
Stoltenberg emphasized that the accession of Sweden to NATO is an important step for both the country itself and for overall stability in northern Europe and the safety of the Alliance as a whole.
"Sweden has long been our partner. Now you are our ally with all the advantages and responsibilities that it envisages," the Secretary General said.
He also stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin began a full -scale invasion of two years ago, but his attempt to destroy Ukraine as a sovereign state was unsuccessful. NATO is now stronger due to the combined action. Stoltenberg also noted that Ukraine is approaching membership in the Alliance, more than ever.
"While brave Ukrainians continue to fight for freedom, we support them. NATO members provide new assistance, including a record package from Sweden, which covers ammunition, airfill systems and warships," Secretary General said.
He also urged Putin to end the war, noting that Ukraine has no alternative, and surrender is not the way to peace.
