Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siarto stated the possibility of blocking Ukraine's accession to the European Union if the Verkhovna Rada approved the Law No. 12380, which provides for a ban on the transit of Russian oil and gas in the territory of Ukraine during martial law. Siarto made this statement on his Facebook page, emphasizing that such a decision is a response to Kyiv's legislative initiatives.
The Hungarian Minister stressed that the EU enlargement decisions are made collectively and unanimously by all Member States, and each state has a sovereign right to choose energy sources and their supply routes. According to him, external pressure on these issues is unacceptable.
"No one has the right to impose more expensive or less secure energy sources to another country," Siarto said.
The minister also stressed that countries seeking European integration should promote EU energy security by providing transport routes for energy supply. He stressed that the closure of gas or oil routes contains contrary to the requirements that are seeking to join the EU.
