Hungary refuses to support the 14th package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation

Hungary has declared its intention not to support the 14th package of sanctions of the European Union against the Russian Federation. According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siarto, new restrictions are contrary to Budapest's national interests in the field of energy.

Siyarto stressed that the sanctions proposed by the EU are threatened with Hungary's energy security. He noted that restrictions on Russian companies and ships that transport energy can significantly affect energy supply to the country. Hungary depends largely on Russian energy resources, and any interruptions can adversely affect the country's economy and life support.

In addition to personal restrictions against individuals, the new package of sanctions plans to include 52 companies, including defense industry (defense), as well as 11 vessels used by Russia for energy transportation. The purpose of sanctions is to increase economic pressure on Russia in connection with its aggressive actions and war against Ukraine.

Hungary's refusal to support the 14th package of sanctions creates significant obstacles to the EU. The unanimity of all EU member states is required to admit new sanctions, and Hungary's position can be a serious challenge for Europe's collective response to Russia.
