Hungary refused to block EU sanctions

Ambassadors of the European Union have agreed to continue economic sanctions against Russia for the next six months, and Hungary will not block the decision this time. This was announced by Radio Liberty editor Ricard Jezvyak in his publication on the social network X on Tuesday, January 21.

"It seems that EU ambassadors will be able to continue economic sanctions against Russia for another six months. Hungary still hesitated, but it seems that the new administration in the United States wants sanctions to be stored," Josvyak said.

The EU has to renew economic sanctions against Russia every six months, and this requires unanimous support for all 27 Member States. By this point, the procedure was almost formality, but this time the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has questioned it.

We will remind, Orban called for the revision of the EU sanction policy, in particular by proposing to "throw sanctions out of the window" and start establishing relations with Russia. The Hungarian government has previously stated that the decision to continue sanctions should only be made after consultation with the new US administration.

However, as it became known, the Hungarian side still agreed to support the continuation of sanctions, which will remain in force until the end of July 2025.
