Negotiations between Kiev and Moscow on the continuation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine ended to no avail. The SOCAR Azerbaijani Energy Company, which at the request of the European Union, has made a mediator in these negotiations, confirmed information about the lack of agreements.
The EU and Ukraine appealed to Azerbaijan to assist in resolving the situation, since the current transit agreement ends on January 1, 2025. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin said there would be no new agreement.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, noted that Kiev is ready to consider the possibility of continuing transit only if Russia does not receive payment for it until the end of the war. Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmigal emphasized that transit is possible only for gas of non-Russian origin at the request of the European Commission.
Socar reported that during the year she was a mediator in the negotiations between the Ukrainian company Naftogaz and the Russian Gazprom. The meetings took place in Istanbul in May and Vienna in August, but the parties could not reach a compromise.
Naftogaz, Gazprom and SOCAR have not yet provided official comments.
