Ukraine has expressed its readiness to supply food to Syria, replacing Russia in this direction. The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaliy Koval said that after the overthrow of Bashar Assad's regime, Ukraine is ready to actively involve in the supply of grain and other food products to this country.
"Where it is difficult, we must be there with our food. We are open to supply our food, and if Syria needs food, then we are there," Koval said. This can be an important opportunity for Ukraine in the Middle East, in particular against the background of uncertainty about the new political situation in Syria and problems with Russian supply.
According to information provided by agencies, the supply of Russian wheat to Syria was suspended due to payments and uncertainty about the new government in the country. As a result, Ukraine can become an important food supplier to the Syrian market.
By this point, Ukraine is already actively exporting wheat and corn to the Middle East, but has not had significant supply to Syria. In 2023-2024, only about 6,000 tons of Ukrainian corn were exported to the Syrian market, which is only a small part of the total exports of corn of 29.4 million tons.
This opens prospects for further expansion of Ukrainian agrarian exports to the Syrian market, which can be an important step in strengthening food security in the Middle East.
