Ukraine acquired the status of a participant in the Rome ISS

Ukraine has acquired full membership in the International Criminal Court (ICS). Now 125 states are participants in the Roman Statute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ukrinform said on Wednesday, January 1.

The ISS spokesman Fad-Abdall stated that Ukraine has the right to vote now when approving the budget, adopting changes and amendments to the Roman Statute, as well as in the choice of judges, future prosecutor and his deputies.

When asked about a Ukrainian judge in the ISS, the spokesman noted that Ukraine as a participant has the right to nominate candidates. The decision will depend on the Voting of the Assembly. He said that there are certain requirements for experience for Judges of the ISS, in particular in international or criminal law.

“It is necessary to be qualified for the highest judicial positions in your home country. Also, every three years there are elections of six judges of the ISS. So we, of course, hope that Ukraine will participate in all possible options for cooperation and support of the International Criminal Court, including the nomination of candidates for the posts of judges, and the number of Ukrainian fabrications.

Also, the requirements for Judges of the ISS are free proficiency at least one of two official languages - English or French.

The spokesman stressed that the ISS is not conducting cases against states, it is always about individual responsibility for crimes. He explained that Ukraine does not need to start a new investigation into Russian military criminals. At the same time, he did not exclude the possibility of initiating new cases and accusations.
