As a result, in 2023, Ukraine took an impressive place among the main suppliers of fresh blueberry to the British market, falling in the TOP-10. The United Kingdom, heading the consumption of this berry in Europe, was a key consumer, both in general and per capita.
In total, Ukraine exported 390 tons of fresh blueberry to the United Kingdom, which is 11% higher than 2022. The British market has become the fifth in volume of sales for Ukrainian blueberry, releasing only Poland, the Netherlands, Georgia and Germany.
According to the economist of the FAO Investment Department Andriy Yarmak, although the United Kingdom is not yet the main market for Ukrainian blueberry suppliers, it offers significant advantages. However, for successful entry into this market, it is important to combine efforts, standardize varieties and approaches to growing, processing and packaging.
Yarmak notes that the United Kingdom has the potential to become an important market for Ukrainian blueberry exporters, as prices for this berry are usually higher than in other markets. Despite the challenges related to the need for large volumes and stable deliveries, Yarmak envisages an increase in production and export in the coming years.
Despite Russia's military aggression, Ukrainian companies retain leadership in global exports of berries. The last five seasons indicate the striking growth of Ukrainian exports of berries, which is due to, in particular, an increase in frozen raspberry shipments.
However, Ukraine has its challenges in the development of berry business, such as heavy revenue losses through re -export to Poland and a low pricing strategy. The development of effective marketing strategies and investment in technology, taking into account the unique agroclimatic conditions of cultivation, can help Ukrainian producers to receive more premium prices for their products.
