"Africa's largest mosque" opened in Algeria

On Sunday, Algeria solemnly opened the "greatest mosque of Africa", the third largest in the world after more than a decade of construction and training.

The construction of the Algeria's large mosque lasted for more than ten years and was initiated by the former President Abdelaziz Butfield. For many years, this project has been criticized.

The mosque is located in the capital of the country, and its minaret has a height of 265 meters, which makes it the highest in the world. The building also houses a large prayer hall. According to Algerian state media, the mosque can accommodate more than 120,000 believers.

The solemn opening of the institution was held with the participation of the current President Algeria Abdelmadjid Tabbun. Ali Mohammed Salaba, Secretary General of the World Union of Muslim Ulems, said the opening of the mosque was aimed at supporting Muslims in achieving kindness and moderation.

The opening time of the mosque came on the eve of the Muslim fast Ramadan, when the believers are traditionally gathering together for prayer in mosques.

The mosque became the deceased President Abdelaziz Butflyka, which was removed from power as a result of mass protests in 2019, inheritance. Initially, the opening of the mosque was scheduled for February 2019, but through protests these plans were stopped.

Abdelasiz Butflik, who headed Algeria for 20 years and resigned because of mass protests, died at the age of 84.
