Today, on February 7, there will be an extraordinary presidential election in Azerbaijan. This historical event is celebrated for the first time all over the country, including Nagorny Karabakh.
According to information from the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, 6.5 million voters have been registered in the country, and 6,537 polling stations will be opened for voting, 26 of them are located in Karabakh. The time of operation of the sites is scheduled from 08:00 to 19:00 local time. At the expense of voting today will be a day off for the country. In addition, another 49 sections will be opened to Azerbaijani citizens abroad.
Seven candidates, including the head of state, Ilham Aliyev (New Azerbaijan), which is already going on the fifth term, are claiming the president. Presidential elections of Azerbaijan took place on April 11, 2018, when Aliyev won, with 86.53% of vote. The next election was supposed to take place in April 2025. However, in December last year, Aliyev signed an order to hold an extraordinary election of the Head of State on February 7. The government of the country explained this step by the desire to restore territorial integrity.
Last September, the Azerbaijan army conducted an operation to restore control over Nagorny Karabakh.
The international community recognizes Nagorny Karabakh sovereign Azerbaijan, but since the early 1990s has not controlled most of the region.
