In Romania, a candidate with far-right views became the leader

Romanian far -right politician Kalin Georgescu surprised the country, gaining leadership in the first round of the presidential election that took place on November 24. According to preliminary calculation results, 93%of the vote, 62-year-old Georgescu received 22%, bypassing the current Prime Minister Marchel Colak with 21%.

Such a result became a true political sensation, given that sociological surveys before the elections were given by Georgesca only about 5% of support. The Political Analyst Magdin has called this difference between forecasts and the result unprecedented since the fall of the communist regime in 1989. Georgeska, who was previously a member of the Alliance for the Combination of Romanians, is known for his criticism of NATO. He has repeatedly opposed the defensive shield from the ballistic missiles in Devedela, calling it "the shame of diplomacy", and claimed that the Alliance would not be able to protect its members in the event of Russian aggression.

In the third place, a candidate from centering Elena Lasconi with a result of 19%was. It became the leader of the Union "Save Romania" in 2023 and actively advocated Ukraine's support and increased defense costs. Despite the losing in the first round, the survey pointed to its potential ability to defeat Claak in the second round. The campaign this year was focused on the increase in the cost of life, as Romania has the highest proportion of the population in the EU, which is at risk of poverty. Claak, in particular, promised considerable social costs and detention of taxes at the current level, despite a record budget deficit of 8%.

The second round of the presidential election is scheduled for December 8. Its results can be decisive for Romania's foreign policy course, which was still one of Ukraine's most awarding supporters in the EU.
