In 2024, tourist destinations in Europe will experience significant changes, the introduction of entrance fees for popular tourist cities has been announced. The measures are designed to control over-tourism and restore the tourism industry after the pandemic.
The most impressive is Venice, which has established itself as the most popular city by introducing a fee for visiting in the amount of 5 euros per visitor. Another recent initiative was the increase of the tourist tax in Paris to 11 euros per night for guests of high-rated hotels.
In the Netherlands, the authorities of Amsterdam decided to introduce the highest tourist tax in Europe - 12.5% of the cost of accommodation for one night. This decision was taken in response to the problem of over-tourism, predicting the arrival of more than 20 million tourists to Amsterdam in 2023.
In Venice, an entrance fee of 5 euros will be charged on certain days, aimed at the development and support of the city. Valencia is introducing a tourist tax of €0.50 to €2 per night to promote sustainable tourism and affordable housing.
In Barcelona, the tourist tax will be increased from April 2024 from 2.75 to 3.25 euros, with the aim of financing infrastructure projects and improving the transport system. Madrid is considering a new tourist tax to combat over-tourism.
In Portugal, cities such as Olhao and Faro are also introducing tourism taxes aimed at clean-up and development. These cities will collect between €1 and €2 per night, taking into account seasonal variations and the difference in accommodation costs.
