Washington presses on Kyiv rather than the Kremlin

US Presidential Advisers Donald Trump are considering weakening sanctions imposed on Russia through its invasion of Ukraine.

What sanctions can be canceled? Removal of restrictions on the price of Russian oil. Weakening of sanctions on oil trade. Other economic sanctions imposed through war. This decision is made against the backdrop of negotiations in Saudi Arabia, where the White House will press on Kiev, forcing Ukraine to make concessions to the Kremlin. On March 11, a meeting of the US and Ukraine delegations will be held for a possible truce. Key problems of negotiations: restriction of the Ukrainian army is one of the requirements of the Kremlin. A partial armistice can lead to restrictions on assistance to Ukraine. The United States is not ready to provide safety of Kiev in a truce. European leaders are skeptical of these arrangements and believe that the Kremlin will not stop even after receiving concessions.

Why is it dangerous? Removing sanctions on Russian oil will allow the Kremlin to receive additional billions of dollars for war. The lack of pressure on Putin will give the Russian Federation time to regroup troops and increase aggression. Instead, the United States is pressed on Ukraine, not the Kremlin, which can lead to a weakening of Kyiv's position. Trump's position on Ukraine remains unpredictable - it continues to press on Kiev, avoiding harsh measures for Moscow. Europe can strengthen its own sanctions against the Russian Federation if the White House weakens the restriction. Ukraine risks staying without important military assistance if it does not make concessions.

The war is ongoing, and any weakening of sanctions can give Putin additional resources to continue it.
