Venezuelan General confessed to a large -scale smuggling of cocaine to the US

The former head of Venezuela's military intelligence, Hugo Armando Karvhal Barrios, known under the pseudonym "El Poyo", threatens life imprisonment in the United States. In the Federal Court of Manhattan, he recognized his involvement in drug trafficking and illegal weapons, reports The Guardian on June 27.

Karvhal headed intelligence during the Presidency of Claus Chavez and Nicholas Maduro. The investigation believes that he was in charge of a drug cartel integrated into the structure of the Venezuelan government and participated in the organization of large -scale supply of cocaine to the United States.

In 2023, Karvhal was extracted to the United States from Spain. The prosecutor's office notes that he can cooperate with the investigation by providing information on Maduro's regime, drug cartels and Venezuela's connections with Iran. At the same time, he is threatened with life imprisonment.

US prosecutor Jay Klayton emphasized that Karvhal was one of Venezuela's most influential figures. He stated that Karvhal and a number of other high-ranking officials used cocaine to fill New York and other American cities with this dangerous substance.
